You’re going to Brugge (Bruges to us Americans)?! JEALOUS! I had a spectacular weekend with my mom and I can’t wait to share what I recommend if you have limited time to explore.
Brugge is known for its charming canals and architecture, world famous chocolate, and huge assortment of beer. Luckily Brugge is on the small side so it will be so easy to get to see and try in one day.
1. Head out from the train station and walk by Burg Square (Burgplein)
It’s hard to miss and used to be the fortress of Brugge.
2. Enjoy breakfast of local and fresh ingredients at That’s Toast
I still daydream about this avocado toast. They serve breakfast all day so even if you are coming in later, this is a must try!
3. Climb the Belfry of Bruges (Belfort) for amazing views
Work off that breakfast wit 366 steps up to get the most glorious views of Markt Square and 360 degree views of the rest of Bruges.
4. Visit the iconic main square Markt and take in all of the “gingerbread houses”
You have probably already seen photos of the iconic Markt Square, but it’s worth stopping by (just don’t eat or drink there as it’s a bit tourist trappy)
5. Wander the canals
It’s easy (and fun!) to get lost wandering the canals of Brugge. There are so many charming private homes and gardens you absolutely most stop and admire.
6. Visit the public park with the most friendly sheep Hof Campers
I never miss an opportunity to see some local fauna. This is also a great place to stop if you are with kiddos.
7. Head back to town center and grab a meringue and coffee at Aux Merveilleux de Fred
This gorgeous cafe is unlike any other I have been to in the world! They specialize in meringue but we grabbed that, some lattes, and a croissant and had a perfect little snack.
8. Try all of the beer!
I can say with certainty that I didn’t have one bad (or weak) beer in all of Bruges. Wander and find a restaurant or bar that feels right and ask if they have samplers! Most restaurants carry multiple local drinks but there are breweries as well.
9. Eat all of the chocolate!
There are DOZENS of chocolate shops (and a museum!) in Bruges. They will be impossible to miss and you must get a few things from each. I also loved the small waffle/frites stalls and was delighted with my chocolate and strawberry covered wafels.
Have the most amazing time in Brugge and tell me all about it!
